Colombo: Fast bowler Ishant Sharma's seventh five-wicket haul helped India bundle out Sri Lanka for 201 but the hosts fought back to take three quick wickets and leave the third and final test evenly poised on Sunday.
India were 21-3 in their second innings at stumps on the third day of the final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, an overall lead of 132 runs.
Skipper Virat Kohli was unbeaten on one and Rohit Sharma was on 14 after the tourists were reduced to 7-3 by the sixth over.
India made 312 in their first innings and Sri Lanka replied with 201 on a day in which 15 wickets fell at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Fast bowler Ishant Sharma claimed a five-wicket haul as he wreaked havoc on the inexperienced Sri Lankan batting order to bundle the hosts out for 201 and secured a 111-run first innings lead.
Earlier, India were bowled out for 312, with Cheteshwar Pujara (145 not out) becoming the fourth Indian batsman in Test history to carry his bat through the innings.
In reply, Sri Lanka stuttered from start of their innings and were reeling at 48-6 before Kusal Perera (55) and Rangana Herath (49) steadied the ship and helped the hosts avoid the follow-on.
Debutant Kusal Perera top-scored with 55 and Rangana Herath made 49, with the last four wickets adding 154 runs after the hosts were reduced to 47-6.
Seamer Ishant Sharma finished with 5-54 to help India take a lead of 111 runs.
Sri Lanka won the opening Test in Galle by 63 runs and India drew level with a 278-run victory in the second match at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo last Monday.
