Galle: India, replying to Sri Lanka's first innings score of 183, were all out for 375 just before stumps on the second day of the first Test in Galle on Thursday.
Sri Lanka starts second inning with trailing by 192 runs but both openers have been sent back for a duck. They were 5/2 at stump on day 2, trailing by 187 runs.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan scored 134 and skipper Virat Kohli made 103, the pair adding 227 runs for the third wicket after resuming the day at 128-2. This partnership was the the biggest for third wicket in Sri Lanka.
Wriddhiman Saha boosted the total with 60 as off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal finished with five wickets.
During the post-tea session, the visitors lost Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra early, but Ishant stuck around and helped Saha register his maiden Test fifty. The wicket-keeper looked composed and took his time to reach the landmark before he got a harsh one from the umpire. The ball went off the helmet and Oxenford gave him caught behind.
Kaushal improved as the innings progressed and completed his second 5-wicket haul in Tests while Pradeep was rewarded for his hard work with 3 wickets.
Earlier, resuming on 128-2, the tourists reached 304 for the loss of six wickets at tea, a first innings lead of 121 runs.
Left-handed Dhawan and Kohli frustrated the Sri Lankan bowlers with their third-wicket stand after India lost Lokesh Rahul and Rohit Sharma early in Wednesday's last session.
Sri Lanka, all out for 183 in their first innings, had a few half chances in the morning session but otherwise failed to trouble the batsmen on the slow pitch at the Galle International Stadium.
Dhawan, who scored 173 against Bangladesh in India's last test in June, hit a cover drive for four off paceman Dhammika Prasad to complete his fourth test century.
The 29-year-old, who was dropped on 28 and 122 during his knock, hit 13 fours in his patient 271-ball innings before he chopped paceman Nuwan Pradeep onto the stumps.
Kohli, in his first full series as India's test captain, hit 11 fours to complete his 11th hundred in tests but was out shortly after going past the three-figure mark.
The 26-year-old fell leg before after fluffing his sweep shot against off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal, who also dismissed Ajinkya Rahane lbw for a duck in his next over.
Pradeep brought the hosts the fourth wicket of the second session by castling Ravichandran Ashwin (seven), an over after he dismissed the well-set Dhawan.
