Galle: Ashwin claimed six wickets and a 100-run stand between Dhawan (53*) and Kohli (45*) put India firmly in control on the day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday.
India finished on day 128/2, trailing by 55-runs.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan was unbeaten on 53 and skipper Virat Kohli was on 45. The pair added 100 for the third wicket after India were reduced to 28-2.
Pacers gave Sri Lanka early breakthroughs with Dhammika Prasad removing opener Lokesh Rahul (7) with leg before while Angelo Mathews dismissed the other out of form Rohit Sharma (9).
Earlier, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin produced a stellar performance as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 183.
Opting to bat first, the hosts stuttered from the start of their innings and were reeling at 60-5 in the 21.3 over. Ashwin turned out be the destroyer-in-chief of Sri Lanka as he exposed opponents' batting frailties by returning figures of 6-46.
Angelo Mathews (64) and Dinesh Chandimal (59) tried to provide stiff resistance by sharing a 79-run partnership for the sixth wicket before tail-enders fell cheaply without any significant contribution. But this partnership is not fair -- Chandimal was dropped by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha on five off Ishant.
Retiring Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara also fell cheaply for mere five runs in his penultimate Test match of his career.
Amit Mishra claimed two wickets, while Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron took one wicket each.
