Colombo: Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by one wicket in the second and final Twenty20 international in Colombo on Saturday to win the series 2-0.
Chasing Sri Lanka's 172-7, Pakistan recovered from 40-5 in the eighth over to surpass the target with four deliveries to spare at the Premadasa stadium.
At this point, nobody would have expected the men in green to pull off a heist. But skipper Shahid Afridi hit some trademark sixes in a 22-ball 45 before getting out.
27-year-old Anwar Ali sent shockwaves across the cricketing world by taking the Lankan attack (including skipper Malinga) to the cleaners when the game looked dead and buried at 107 for 7 while chasing 173.
Anwar Ali then proved to the unlikely hero as he hit some lusty blows in the end. But the game had another twist in the offing when Anwar Ali and Sohail Tanvir were dismissed in the penultimate over. Pakistan then needed 6 from 6 deliveries with one wicket left and it was Imad Wasim who stuck a wonderful six to seal the game.
Earlier, Aggressive batting by debutant Shehan Jayasuriya and Chamara Kapugedera lifted Sri Lanka to 172-7.
Jayasuriya, a 23-year-old left-hander smashed three fours and two sixes in his 32-ball 40 before he was fifth out.
But it was Kapugedera who boosted the total with an unbeaten 48 off 25 balls that contained four sixes and two boundaries.
Kapugedera put on 55 for the sixth wicket with Milinda Siriwardana (23) as the hosts plundered 59 runs in the final five overs.
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena was among a packed crowd of 35,000 at the Premadasa stadium to watch the action after home team captain Lasith Malinga won the toss and elected to bat.
Openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan were removed by the fourth over with the score at 32 before Jayasuriya and Dhananjaya de Silva (14) carried the total to 61 without further loss.
Pakistan, who won the first T20 match on Thursday, complete a hat-trick of series wins on the current tour, having clinched the Tests 2-1 and the one-dayers 3-2.
