Scotland Qualify for World Twenty20 2016

Edinburgh: Scotland have booked their place at the World Twenty20 in India next year after topping Pool B in the Qualifier event.

With opener Kyle Coetzer making 63, the Scots reached 173-5 in Edinburgh to beat Oman by 23 runs and make it four wins from six group games.

Netherlands and Afghanistan also reached eight points but could not match the hosts' run rate.

The Dutch missed out by a fraction after thumping Kenya, while the Afghans suffered their second abandonment.

Afghanistan, who suffered a surprise loss to Oman on Wednesday, will be frustrated after their showdown with winless Canada was called off without a ball being bowled due to the wet conditions in Stirling.

Kenya were also in a position to overtake Scotland with a victory but blew their chance as they slumped to 97 all out against the Netherlands.

Dutch were aiming to surpass that total in 7.4 overs to take top spot but, despite some lusty hitting, took five balls more to wrap up their four-wicket win.

Scottish captain Preston Mommsen closed on 32 not out at Goldenacre, with Coetzer's fine innings providing a solid platform for the home side at Goldenacre.

Coetzer, who had been originally left out of the squad, took just 38 balls to reach his 63, while Calum MacLeod and Matthew Cross both made 20 and Richie Berrington made 26.

Safyaan Sharif then took two early wickets for the Scots and returned to remove the dangerous Aamir Kaleem (59) in the 18th over.

Kaleem's departure signalled the end of Oman's challenge as they reached 150-7.

Securing first place in the group also takes Scotland through to the Qualifier semi-finals when the knockout phase begins in Ireland next week.

Six Associate members go through to the first round of the World Twenty20, where they will join Bangladesh and Zimbabwe to fight it out for the two available places in the Super 10 round.
