Daniel Vettori Announces His International Retirement

Auckland: New Zealand veteran Daniel Vettori has confirmed his retirement from International Cricket by revealing that the World Cup final was his last game for his country.

The team landed back at Auckland after playing the final which they lost to Australia and upon meeting reporters he had this to say, "It was my last game for New Zealand, in the final, so it was a lovely way to finish. It would have been great to win, but I'm pretty proud of everyone, the way we've gone about things the last six weeks."

The 36-year-old former captain had been widely expected to retire from international cricket at the conclusion of New Zealand's involvement in the tournament.

New Zealand were beaten by seven wickets by co-hosts Australia in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, with Vettori suffering a lower leg injury before the game.

He finished with 0-25 from five overs, though took 15 wickets at 20.46 throughout the tournament with an economy rate of 4.04.

He made a short comeback to the Test arena and played one Test against Pakistan late last year after a gap of two and half years and had indicated already that he wouldn't be donning the Blackcaps jersey post the World Cup, so this decision didn't come as a surprise to anybody.

Vettori ends his international career on a high as he found a place in the team of the tournament courtesy of his brilliant performances with the ball throughout the World Cup.

He became the youngest Kiwi to make a debut when he played his first game in the year 1997. He has picked up 361 wickets in his Test career and had also managed to score more than 4000 runs.

In the ODI arena though, he is their most capped player and their leading wicket-taker with 305 wickets to his name.
