Dubai: Mohammad Tauqir will lead the UAE in the 2015 World Cup. The Emirates Cricket Board announced the final 15-man squad for the tournament and Khurram Khan will be the vice-captain of the team.
Khurram might consider himself unlucky to have missed out on the captaincy, considering his wonderful performances in the recent past. In the four-match ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE, Khurram notched up scores of 53, 132* and 85* in the three games and led from the front as UAE won the series 3-1.
On the other hand, Tauqir has a modest average in the five ODIs that he had played. He has played five ODIs at an average of 21.75 with just one fifty, which came against India during the Asia Cup match in Dambulla way back in 2004. Khurram averages 53 from 10 ODIs with three fifties and a century
In a statement by the Emirates Cricket Board, it said Tauqir's appointment was seen as an opportunity to showcase the UAE's local leadership and playing style in the tournament. His appointment is to highlight the integral role of indigenous players in the future sustainability of the game in the country.
The UAE are placed in Group B and will start their campaign against Zimbabwe on February 19 at the Saxton Oval in Nelson.
