Sydney: India went to stumps at 342 for five on day three of the fourth Commonwealth Bank Test after their new captain Virat Kohli produced another masterclass, finishing unbeaten on 140 to again foil Australia's best-laid plans.
Steve Smith's side had been frustrated by missed chances - two from the captain himself - and class batting from KL Rahul (110) and Virat Kohli, who posted his fourth hundred of the series and his third in as many innings as captain.
Shane Watson dismissed India's middle-order pair Ajinkya Rahane (13) and Suresh Raina (0) with successive deliveries midway through the final session to give the hosts some joy.
Watson was somewhat fortunate with his first wicket, after a delivery that kept low and struck Rahane on the pad as the left-hander attempted to pull was shown in replays to be clearing the stumps. He then had Raina reaching at a slightly wider delivery first ball, with the left-hander tickling an edge through to a delighted Brad Haddin.
Earlier, Mitchell Starc ended a 141-run stand between Rahul and Kohli when the former skied an attempted pull shot straight up, and the bowler came through to take the chance after tea.
Rahul, mentored by namesake Rahul Dravid and renowned for the high price he puts on his wicket, made a steadfast response with Kohli to Australia's first-innings total of 572 for seven.
The 22-year-old, who came up with two embarrassing dismissals on debut in Melbourne, posted his maiden Test century off 253 balls.
The milestone came in the final over before tea on Thursday, as he and Virat Kohli negotiated five overs of the second new ball. Rahul benefited from two reprieves in the morning session - a bungled run-out on 41 and Steve Smith's dropped catch on 46.
It was distinctly different to the morning, when the tourists managed 19 runs in the first hour of play. The hosts' persistence paid off in the 44th over.
Rohit Sharma played on and departed for 53, attempting a sweep shot to a Lyon ball outside off stump that deserved more respect.
