Brisbane: Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne starting on December 26. Marsh, who suffered a hamstring injury during the second Test in Brisbane, could not bowl in the second innings and did not take the field for most of the Test match. 25-year-old Queensland batsman Joe Burns has been drafted into the squad for the third Test and is all set to make his Test debut.
Speaking on the changes in the squad, Australian coach Darren Lehmann said, "Joe Burns can bat anywhere from 1-6. We've got some flexibility there. I have been with Burns during my stint as Queensland coach and I knew that he had it in him to make it to the Test level."
Burns has had a good start to the First-Class season for Queensland. He started off with a 98 against South Australia while the highlight was his 183 against New South Wales and his consistency continued with another fifty against the same opponents in Sydney.
Ryan Harris missed the second Test due to a quad strain but Lehmann said they will take a call closer to the Melbourne Test. In the morning, Harris was seen bowling with Peter Siddle, who also missed the Test due to poor form. When asked about the injury to David Warner, Lehmann was confident that he will play in the third Test. Warner was hit on the thumb during the second innings and he said his thumb felt a bit sore.
Australia squad for the third Test: Chris Rogers, David Warner, Shane Watson, Steven Smith (Capt.), Joe Burns, Shaun Marsh, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon
