St. John's: Jason Holder, all of 21 one-day internationals old, has been appointed captain of the West Indies ODI team, replacing Dwayne Bravo for the five-ODI series against South Africa next month.
Bravo has been dropped from the West Indies ODI squad altogether, along with former captain Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard for the series beginning January 16, according to a WICB release.
The release added that the recommendations to the team were made by the selection panel led by chairman and former captain Clive Lloyd, who said the decision to install the 23-year-old was taken with an eye to the future.
The decision to drop regular captain Bravo along with Sammy and Pollard was taken in view of the players' dispute with the WICB over wages, which saw the West Indies tea pull out of their series against India mid-way into the tour.
West Indies, however, were bolstered by the return of opener Chris Gayle, who has been battling back problems and had to sit out of the Test series against South Africa.
