Adelaide: Nathan Lyon took 12 wickets for the match to propel Australia to a remarkable 48-run victory late on day five in the first Commonwealth Bank Test in Adelaide.
Despite a magnificent 141 from India captain Virat Kohli, the tourists spectacularly lost their final eight wickets in the final session as Lyon finished with innings figures of 7-152 to drive his side to a stunning win on a dramatic day that also saw Michael Clarke leave the contest with an injured right hamstring.
Lyon had Rohit Sharma (6) caught at leg slip by David Warner, his fourth scalp for the match, before bowling wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (13) to swing this undulating contest back in Australia's favour and achieve the first 10-wicket haul of his career.
But it was the wicket of Kohli, his 11th for the match, that was the critical breakthrough, the right-hander finally playing a false shot as he sent the ball to Mitch Marsh at deep midwicket, who just clung on to the chance.
It brought to an end a magnificent innings from the India skipper, who posted his highest Test score and for a long time looked likely to see his side home.
Earlier, Lyon dismissed Vijay for 99 - the first lbw of the match - and then completed a double-wicket maiden with the scalp of Ajinkya Rahane (0), who appeared unlucky to be given caught at bat pad by Chris Rogers, lasting just five deliveries after the 185-run stand between Kohli and Vijay came to a dramatic end with the latter one short of his century.
Haddin had taken the reins after Michael Clarke suffered a fresh hamstring before tea.
The hosts failed to claim a single wicket in Saturday's middle session, when Clarke tweaked his right hamstring attempting to field a ball.
Clarke overcame a left hamstring injury to play the first Test, while his chronic back injury flared up on day one.
The 33-year-old limped off the field, with Cricket Australia awaiting the results of scans.
Mitchell Johnson sent down a fiery short spell at the start and end of the second session, creating a tough chance when Vijay was on 85.
Vijay belted the ball near Marsh at short cover, the allrounder instinctively flinging one hand out but unable to hold onto the leather.
Nathan Lyon, who toiled throughout 21 overs, had a handful of confident lbw shouts turned down by umpire Marais Erasmus.
The most remarkable came when Vijay was on 24 and offered no shot to a sharp-turning ball, with replays confirming the not-out decision would have been overturned if sent upstairs.
Cheteshwar Pujara played for spin that wasn't there, feathering an edge to keeper Brad Haddin.
Nathan Lyon is the Man of the Match
