Adelaide: Captain Virat Kohli scored a rousing century after being struck on the head with a bouncer to guide India past the follow-on mark on day 3 at Adelaide on Thursday.
Day Three of the Test belonged to India's debutant captain Virat Kohli, who scored 115 of 184 deliveries to take his side to a comfortable position against hosts Australia. India, however, needs a further 149 runs to overtake Australia.
Kohli scored his seventh century in his 30th Test. It was first as a Test captain.
At the draw of stumps, Rohit Sharma on 33 of 61 deliveries and wicketkeeper-bastman Wriddhiman Saha on 1 (16 deliveries) were at the crease, and will resume batting for India on Friday.
For Australia, left arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets each for 90 and 103 runs respectively. Ryan Harris claimed a wicket for 49 runs.
For India, apart from Kohli, the other players who scored were Murali Vijay 53 of 88 deliveries, Cheteshwar Pujara 73 of 135 deliveries and Ajinkya Rahane 62 of 76 deliveries. Shikhar Dhawan scored 25 of 36 deliveries.
Earlier, Australia captain Michael Clarke declared on his team's overnight first innings total of 517 for seven at the start of the third day.
Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 162 as one of three Australian centurions.
David Warner scored 145 and Clarke hit a courageous 128, battling a back injury.
