India v Sri Lanka, 5th ODI, Ranchi

Kohli Guides India to Maiden 5-0 Sweep, Despite Mathews Ton

Ranchi: Virat Kohli hit a well-timed century of his career to steer India to victory in the fifth one-day international (ODI) against Sri Lanka. India won the series 5-0.

Kohli got his first 50-over ton against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens back in 2009. It comes as no surprise that the Islanders are his favourite opponents, with 6 of his centuries coming against them.

Out of the 21 ODI centuries the 26-year-old has scored, India have lost only twice – against England at Cardiff in 2011 (on D/L method) and against New Zealand at Napier earlier this year.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews played a superb innings as he scored his maiden century, scoring 139 and leading the visitors to set a target of 286 runs.

India lost both their openers early, with Matthews claiming both scalps, before Ambati Rayadu (59) and Kohli steadied the innings. However, once Rayadu was run-out, India started collapsing, with no batsman able to give Kohli support. India slipped from 180-3 to 231-7.

However, Akshar Patel (17 not out) was able to withstand the Lankan attack, and he kept the run metre ticking. In the end, Kohli smashed two sixes off an Ajantha Mendis over for the win. The Indian stand-in captain remained not out at 139, winning the match with eight balls to spare

Earlier, Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to bat.

For India debut for Kedar Jadhav, he replace Suresh Raina. Umesh Yadav has been rested making way for Ashwin.

Niroshan Dickwella make his ODI debut for Sri Lanka, he replace Kusal Perera.
