India v Sri Lanka, 5th ODI, Ranchi

India Aim to Whitewash as Raina Rested

Ranchi: Suresh Raina will be rested for the fifth and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Ranchi on Sunday. India, who have dominated the visitors in the last four ODIs, are aiming to achieve a 5-0 whitewash.

Raina, who has been in good form in the last couple of months, has been rested taking into account India's busy schedule in the coming months. This opens up an opportunity for the other members in the squad. Kedar Jadhav, who was selected in the squad for the final two ODIs, missed out on selection in Kolkata and looks set to make his debut in Ranchi.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has urged the team to show some ruthlessness as they build up momentum for the Australia tour and the 2015 World Cup. Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews will be desperate to avoid the whitewash as they look to end a poor tour on a high.

Four humbling defeats have multiplied the problems Sri Lanka are facing three months from the World Cup in 2015. India have left them outplayed, outclassed and out-thought, at least as far as Angelo Mathews goes.

Gracious as though he may be in defeat, Mathews has been left to ponder over what he and his team management can possibly do to reverse the result in the fifth and final ODI at Ranchi on Sunday.

As he displayed in the third ODI at Hyderabad, Jayawardene's ability goes beyond the batting order. Even on that occasion, he arrived at the crease in the third over with Sri Lanka two wickets down for seven, and built the innings even as the batsmen at the other end continued their procession back to the dressing room.

A three-way jostle for who gets to partner Dilshan seems to have troubled Mathews to the extent that he is running out of excuses to offer as the defeats pile up.

Sri Lanka's bowling attack may have lacked the penetration owing to the absence of Lasith Malinga [injury] and Sachithra Senanayake [banned from bowling], but Mathews can't just keep raising his concern over his team's batting performances for too long
