Pakistan, who batted after winning the toss, were 269-1 at stump on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Mohammad Hafeez missed a hundred by just four runs as Pakistan lost their first wicket on 178 after a solid start on a placid Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch.
At the stump Ahmed Shehzad was unbeaten on 126 and with him Azhar Ali on 46 not out.
Earlier, Pakistan have won the toss and have opted to bat.
