Hamilton: Rain has ruined the third ANZ One Day International between the Blackcaps and South Africa, with the heavens limiting Seddon Park to just 30.4 overs in total.
Despite a dismal forecast, the match managed to get underway on time and there were brief hopes that the weather would hold out. It wasn’t to be, with South Africa reaching 157-3 before the rain intervened.
Earlier, skipper Brendon McCullum won the toss and opted to bowl first, with Seddon Park offering a bowler friendly wicket in its first international of the summer.
Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock got their team off to a breezy start, but just as the signs were getting ominous, Matt Henry drew an uncharacteristic shot from Amla. On just 12, he popped a short ball high into the air where Nathan McCullum strolled in from square leg to take the catch.
Rilee Rossouw continued his struggles, facing six balls before departing to a tremendous diving caught and bowled by Matt Henry for a duck. David Miller was next to go after forming a partnership of 30 runs with de Kock, before being bowled by Jimmy Neesham for 17 from 29 balls.
De Kock was in fine touch though, working the ball around and regularly finding the boundary. The BLACKCAPS struggled at times to find the right lines and were punished with wides and no balls. Nathan McCullum was bustling and efficient, but unable to stop de Kock and AB de Villiers putting together a formidable partnership.
De Kock reached his 50 from 67 balls and continued to punish the attack, while de Villiers travelled at just under a run a ball. Unfortunately the rain, which had been toying with the match all morning, forced everyone from the field at the 30 over mark and its presence would linger for the rest of the afternoon.
Drizzle persisted and just before 4pm the match was officially called off.
It was a frustrating way to finish the series for the Blackcaps, with South Africa walking away 2-0 victors.
The Blackcaps now turn their attention to Pakistan, with the Test team departing for the UAE on Thursday.
