Dubai: Younis Khan (106) hits a fighting century and Johnson picked up three wickets on a frustrating opening day for the tourists in Dubai on Wednesday.
Quick wickets with the new ball top and tailed the first day for Australia in the first Test against Pakistan, with a battling and patient century from Younis Khan thwarting them in between.
Mitchell Johnson was again Australia's star, the strike weapon picking up wickets in his first over with both new balls on his way to 3-22 from 20 overs, including 13 maidens, as Pakistan reach 4-219 at stumps in Dubai.
Younis had thwarted Australia throughout the middle part of what was largely an attritional day of Test Match cricket where the only thing slower than the Dubai pitch was Pakistan's rate of scoring.
The century was Younis's 25th Test hundred, and his first against Australia, completing a full set of centuries against Test-playing nations for the 36-year-old veteran of 91 Tests.
Having batted for nearly five-and-a-half hours, and 220 balls, Younis advanced down the pitch to loft Nathan Lyon over wide long-off for the day's only six to bring up his milestone.
However, as soon as the new ball was taken Johnson struck, getting a delivery to straighten off the seam and rapping Younis on the pads. The decision was upheld on review, Pakistan's hero departed for 106 and Johnson picked up his third wicket of the day.
The new ball continued to cause problems, with Asad Shafiq edging just short of Michael Clarke at second slip in the next over off Peter Siddle.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq (34 not out) and Shafiq (9 not out) reached stumps for Pakistan. It was a gritty innings for the out-of-form Pakistan skipper who had managed 15 runs in the limited-overs portion of this tour before he controversially sat out the third one-day international.
Australia made two quick breakthroughs to remove both openers, but then could only extract one wicket in 77 overs as Pakistan crawled along at less than 2.5 runs per over.
Australia's bowlers were disciplined, sending down 30 maidens over the course of the day but were not able to utilise the expected reverse swing, while the twin-spin threat of Nathan Lyon (0-78 from 24 overs) and debutant Stephen O'Keefe (0-49 from 15 overs) toiled without reward.
Earlier, Pakistan have won the toss and opted to bat.
Imran Khan and Yasir Shah making their debuts for Pakistan. While Mitchell Marsh and Steven O'Keefe debutant for Aussies.
