Bangalore: After finishing on the wrong side of a Super Over to Cape Cobras, the Barbados Tridents signed off from the Champions League T20 with their first and only win of the competition, with James Franklin putting it past his compatriots from the Northern Knights with his batting heroics on Tuesday.
Chasing a revised total of 138 from 19 overs, Franklin (33*, 25b, 1x4, 2x6) and Elton Chigumbura (18*, 15b, 2x4) - drafted into the side at the expense of Neil McKenzie - struck a timely 33-run stand for the fifth wicket to take their team across the line.
The modest target was, however, needed to be overhauled on a tricky Chinnaswamy stadium surface. Dilshan Munaweera had been the Tridents' biggest surprise in the tournament, and got them off to a typically rollicking start, but was cut short to a moment of brilliance in the field from Daryl Mitchell off Mitchell Santner.
Taking the pace off the ball seemed key, and Ish Sodhi's introduction made an immediate impact with Raymon Reifer and Jason Holder falling in the same over. While the Knights' impressive pace-bowling duo of Trent Boult and Southee suffered, Sodhi (3 for 18) and Scott Styris (0 for 16) pulled the Tridents back with economical middle overs.
Jonathan Carter (30) and Franklin saw off the next eight overs with risk-free accumulation, and only after Carter's dismissal - Anton Devcich's effort to catch the ball at the boundary and then flicking it back to Daryl Mitchell reminded of Tim Southee's effort earlier in the tournament - did they show urgency. The return of the pacers meant the ball came onto the bat much quicker, and the pair made them pay to wrap up a consolation win.
Rain had interrupted the first game early but didn't cause any overs to be docked, but the heavy overhead conditions came to play yet again as the Knights, put into bat by Rayad Emrit, could only manage 135 for 8 after play was stopped a little over the halfway mark. The Tridents ended up chasing just two runs higher on account of the rain delay that came in the middle of the Knights innings.
The ball continued to stop on the batsmen like it did during the game in the afternoon, and Kane Williamson's early wicket meant Devcich and captain Daniel Flynn had to consolidate for long periods. Flynn departed to Munaweera shortly before rain interrupted the proceedings for 45 minutes, and like in the previous game, there was a wicket on the other side of the break.
Devcich fell for 47 but had taken as many balls to get there, which meant the Knights needed to kick on as the game was already shortened to 19 overs. BJ Watling (29, 19b, 3x4, 1x6) and Tim Southee (19, 10b, 3x4) added quick runs to end the innings on a high, but the total was too low to trouble the Tridents.
Earlier, Barbados Tridents have won the toss and have opted to field.
Mitchell Santner replaces Daniel Harris for Knights while Neil McKenzie is out and Elton Chigumbura in for Barbados.
