Chandigarh: Kings XI Punjab joined Kolkata Knight Riders in the last-4 after beating Northern Knights by 120 runs at Mohali on Friday.
The IPL runners-up posted a mammoth 215 for 4 thanks to fifties from Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag after which the KXIP bowlers, lead by Karanveer Singh, bowled the team from New Zealand out for 95 in 15.2 overs to register their third win in as many match.
Knights, on the other hand, are very much out of contention now with one win and two losses.
Chasing such a big total, Knights needed their best batsman Kane Williamson to fire but when he fell for 20 off the bowling of Thisara Perera, their hopes went up the spout. Anton Devcich's wicket to Akshwar Patel for 28 six balls later made it all over bar the shouting for the Kiwi team.
There was no fight from Knights and they were bowled out for a paltry score with legspinner Karanveer returning 4 for 15. Patel chipped in for 2 for 16. This was the second time in the tournament that Knights failed to get past 100.
George Bailey's men, who beat Barbados Tridents and Hobart Hurricanes in their previous matches largely because of their batting, once again showed their batting muscle after being put in to bat by Knights captain Daniel Flynn.
Vohra was particularly aggressive and his approach at the start made in-form duo Trent Boult and Tim Southee look ordinary. After hitting Ish Sodhi for back-to-back sixes, Vohra tried for another but this time found Boult at deep midwicket for 65 off 32 balls with 102 on the board.
There was a little collapse following Vohra's depature. In a surprise move, Sri Lanka allrounder Thisara Perera was moved up the order to No.3 but he went for one shot too many and fell to Scott Kuggeleijn for 16. Glenn Maxwell (7) and Sehwag (52 off 37 balls) too perished trying to up the ante.
At 151 for 4, Bailey joined David Miller and both put the innings back on track adding a quick 37. Bailey fell to a brilliant catch by Anton Devcich on the long-off boundary off Scott Styris for 18.
However, Miller (40 off 18 balls) stayed till the end to ensure the hosts had a formidable total on the board. Kuggeleijn and Sodhi returned 2 for 34 and 2 for 37 respectively.
Manan Vohra is the Man of the Match
Earlier, Northern Knights have won the toss and have opted to field.
Knights have Dan Harris back in for Jono Boult.
