Chandigarh: For the second time running in the ongoing Champions League T20 Kings XI Punjab survived a scare, beating Barbados Tridents this time at Mohali on Saturday.
KXIP, who had to sweat a bit against Hobart Hurricanes in the their first match for a five-wicket win, needed Akshar Patel to chase down 175 with four wickets in hand and two balls to spare.
Needing 25 runs to win in two overs, Patel (23*) hit Ravi Rampaul for two fours and a six and that allowed David Miller (46*) to seal the match with a six off Jason Holder in the last over.
The Tridents spinning duo of Sri Lankan Jeevan Mendis (2 for 18) and Ashley Nurse (1/32) had almost done the job for the Caribbean team, especially Mendis who put the wind up the renowned KXIP batting.
He took the wickets of Virender Sehwag and George Bailey, while Nurse threw a scare into the hosts with the scalp of Thisara Perera.
Thanks to Miller's cool in such a situation and Patel's exuberance that Bailey's men managed to get over the line. Earlier in the day, KXIP came up with a good bowling performance in the second half of the innings as they restricted the Tridents to 174 for 6.
The West Indian champions were looking at 200 at one time but KXIP, who boast a dangerous batting line-up, pulled back a great deal in the last nine overs.
Sri Lanka international Dilshan Munaweera fired a 26-ball 50 at the top to help his team reach 61 runs in six overs and things were looking really ominous for the 2014 IPL runners-up.
With the Tridents 100 for 2 in 11 overs, Bailey threw the ball to Perera and the Sri Lankan got into action straight away. He gave away just six runs and in his next over, 15th of the innings, got rid of James Franklin (10) with a short ball. In between, Anureet Singh had snared Jonathan Carter for 20.
After Patel bowled a tight 16th over giving away just six runs, Perera took his second wicket in the next, this time removing Zimbabwean Elton Chigumbura for 3.
With the pressure mounting, Raymon Reifer cut loose and took 16 runs off Patel to bring the innings back on track. Prior to that over the West Indian team had just managed only 34 runs in six overs.
Unperturbed by the Reifer onslaught, Anureet bowled a decent 19th over but Parvinder Awana yielded 15 in the last. Reifer remained unbeaten on 60 off 42 balls.
In the last nine overs, the Caribbean team scored 74 runs for the loss of four wickets. Awana, who had got rid of William Perkins and Munaweera in an over, returned 3 for 46, while Perera did 2 for 15
