Leeds: Joe Root hit a superb 113 as England beat India by 41 runs in the fifth one-day international at Headingley, with the tourists winning the series 3-1.
Three heavy defeats meant England had already lost the series, with one match washed out, but Root's highest ODI score laid the foundations for victory.
He shared crucial partnerships with Alastair Cook (46) and Jos Buttler (49) as England posted 294-7.
Ben Stokes, who hit 33 off 23 balls, took three wickets as India were bowled out well short on 253.
The Indian openers - Shikhar Dhawan (31) and Ajinkya Rahane (0) - had the luxury of chasing a less than challenging totals in the last three ODIs and confronted by a total close to 300, they looked a touch nervy and that was very evident the way Rahane was dismissed in the first over.
He went after a wide delivery slicing it straight to point. The same delivery the Mumbai batsman had put away at Cardiff, Nottingham and Birmingham with ease and much more conviction through the point region.
In walked Virat Kohli and yes, there was that sense of inevitability that his horrible England tour will continue and he was trapped in front of the stumps first ball. Though he survived the appeal, 17 balls later the 25-year-old poked one to the slips to get out for 13.
India slumped further when Moeen Ali took two crucial wickets in the middle overs. First was a well set Dhawan chancing his arm against Ali failing to read a loopy delivery to get out. Suresh Raina (18) went for a cut and gave a fiant edge to Jos Buttler. England had consolidated their innings really well after a shaky start courtesy a big partnership between Root and Buttler, but for India the consolidation came in phases and never really looked convincing.
The Raina-Ambati Rayudu association yielded 42 runs while Rayudu and MS Dhoni got together for 41 runs. In the process Rayudu notched up his third ODI fifty but failed to connect a pull off Stokes and departed for 53.
Ravindra Jadeja joined Dhoni in the middle and the skipper hit his trademark blows for six in the 'V' to get some quick runs but again, the partnership lasted 41 runs. With wickets falling at regular intervals India never really got the momentum and England were buoyed by some tidy bowling spell in the middle overs by Ali (2-34) and Steven Finn (2-37).
Jadeja stuck around for a bit long and made the match a bit interesting with some lusty blows late in the innings. He hit Stokes for three boundaries in the 47th over but could only narrow the margin of defeat. He was out on 87 off 68 balls. For England, Stokes took three wickets while Anderson and Ali chipped in with two each as they registered a much wanted win to end the ODI series 1-3.
Earlier, after conceding the ODI series 3-0, England went in to the fifth ODI with positive intent after being put into bat by India and they got positive results notching up their highest team score.
Root combined for an 108-run stand off just 81 balls for the fifth wicket with Buttler (49) after England looked to be wobbling against the Indian spinners in the middle overs. Ashwin and Suresh Raina gave away runs at an economy of under five while Umesh Yadav was the most expensive giving away 46 runs in 6 overs. Mohammad Shami picked up two wickets for 52 runs in his ten overs.
Skipper Alastair Cook in his last outing of the tour made a dodgy 46 before falling to a sweep shot after losing his opening partner Alex Hales (4) as early as in the fourth over to Yadav. Ali, promoted up the order in the absence Gary Ballance, failed to make the most of the opportunity falling to a rash shot for just nine.
Root walked in next and looked much more determined to stay in the middle and despite the Indian spinners -Ashwin and Raina choking the run flow, the Yorkshire batsman looked unperturbed.
Cook and Eoin Morgan's fall in quick succession started the Root-Buttler association. The duo didn't seem bogged down and rotated the strike well to keep the scorecard ticking with Root reaching his fifty in 68 balls.
Buttler then got into the act in the Powerplay as England racked up 55 runs from overs 36-40 setting themselves up for a late flourish. Buttler though departed for 49 to Jadeja getting run-out in the 42nd over, but Root went on to register his second ODI hundred an over later with a six and went on score 113 before walking back to the pavilion.
England lower-middle order then ensured that the team go past the 290 run mark scoring 46 runs in the last five over.
Earlier, Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field.
One change for India -- Unesh Yadav in for Dhawal Kulkarni.
