Harare: Australia set new ODI record at Harare before bowlers skittle Zimbabwe for a 198-run victory to open tri-series at Harare Sports Club on Monday.
Glenn Maxwell fell short of a century but his entertaining, innovative knock helped Australia to a mammoth victory.
Maxwell hit 93, Mitchell Marsh 89, and the Australians added 143 in the final ten overs to post a Harare Sports Club record of 6-350.
A fan of the unconventional and the unorthodox – he recently claimed to have invented a 'mystery shot' revealed by cricket.com.au – Maxwell was lucky not to be bowled early on after missing a reverse sweep.
He survived, and flourished, punishing the Zimbabwe attack to all parts of the ground in only the way that Maxwell can.
He was caught on the boundary for 93 from just 46, the second Australian to see a century go begging after Mitchell Marsh was out in similar fashion for 89 from a comparatively pedestrian 83 balls.
Maxwell's departure brought Mitchell Johnson to the crease, who quickly despatched a straight six straight into the commentary box window.
The sound of smashing glass sent the commentators Neil Manthrop and Pommie Mbangwa scrambling, the later revealed to have suffered some small cuts from the glass shards.
Some brutal hitting by Australia's batsmen powered it to 350 for 6 — the highest ODI total at Harare Sports Club — and the bowlers followed up to dismiss Zimbabwe for 152 in 39.3 overs.
Glenn Maxwell smashed 93 from just 46 balls with nine fours and five sixes for Australia. Mitchell Marsh thumped 89 off 83 balls with seven fours and four sixes. They blitzed Zimbabwe's bowlers in a damaging fourth-wicket stand of 109 from only 54 deliveries.
Hamilton Masakadza made 70 for Zimbabwe but had no support. Steve Smith took 3 for 16 for Australia.
Earlier, Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to field first.
