London: England were 62-0 at stump on day 1 in reply to India's 148 on the opening day of the final Test at The Oval on Friday.
Earlier, India, after losing the toss, were bowled out for 148.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the India captain, top-scored with 82 before he was last man out after pulling Stuart Broad to Chris Woakes at long leg.
Ishant Sharma was seven not out, having batted for over an hour while helping Dhoni added 58 for the last wicket in the largest partnership of the innings.
As in their innings and 54-run defeat in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, India lost five wickets before lunch on the first day.
But just as in Manchester, where he made 71 in a first innings total of 152, Dhoni prevented an even worse embarrassment with the bat for the tourists.
At The Oval, England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to field in an overcast conditions on a green-tinged pitch, with Dhoni having batted first when the coin fell his way at Old Trafford.
Woakes took three for 30 and fellow pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Jordan three for 32.
Meanwhile spearhead paceman James Anderson's return of two for 51, left him five shy of Ian Botham's record for most Test wickets by an England bowler of 383.
