Manchester: England were stalled on 237 for six after heavy downpour cut short day two of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
A total of nine overs were bowled after the lunch interval which saw the English batsmen make steady progress, extending their lead to 85 when rain came pouring down and forced early stumps.
Joe Root and Jos Buttler took England forward as Pankaj Singh continued his search for a maiden Test wicket. Although he gave India a few close moments, the medium-pacer had nothing to show in the wickets column. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who was introduced just before the lunch interval was negated well by the pair.
Root moved on to 48 and Buttler took his score to 22 for an unbeaten stand of 67 runs before rain lashed Old Trafford causing a loss of almost three hours and more than two sessions of play.
After a lot of inspection, the umpires decided to call play off after the outfield was left flooded with water.
The play began with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3 for 47) and Varun Aaron (3 for 48) accounting for crucial England wickets as India staged a comeback of sorts in the first session. England lost three wickets for runs as Bhuvneshwar dismissed overnight batsmen Chris Jordan (13) and Ian Bell (58) in a span of two overs, followed by Moeen Ali's wicket to Aaron to leave England at 201 for six at lunch, with a lead of 49 runs.
Earlier Indian bowlers looked a whole different bunch when they took field on day two. Bhuvneshwar started well peppering Bell outside the off stump, to which the right hander looked at ease offering no shot.
Bhuvneshwar got a credible amount of movement off the deck, but it wasn't enough to perturb Bell, who negotiated the swing well and reached his 42nd half-century off Pankaj in the next over.
Jordan got off the mark with a four, courtesy an audacious pull off Pankaj. However, it was the same shot that gave India their first breakthrough of the morning.
The nightwatchman found Aaron at mid-wicket who dived and took a smart catch giving the Uttar Pradesh bowler his second wicket of the innings. He would add a third to his tally two overs later, as Bell offered a faint nick to an outswinger to MS Dhoni for 58.
With the score at 140 for 5 and two new batsmen at the crease in Root and Ali, India tied England down with Aaron raking in some serious pace, occasionally troubling Ali and Root. Ali spanked back-to-back boundaries off Bhuvneshwar in the 48th over but had his stumps rattled by Aaron to a quick inswinging full-length delivery four overs later for 13. Root, at the other end, was troubled by the bounce and turn of Ravi Ashwin, as he edged and missed a few.
