New Delhi: Highly-rated Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson and Railways legspinner Karn Sharma have been included for the first time in a senior representative Indian side, as the national selectors gave an indication as to the direction they are thinking heading into the 2015 World Cup.
Mumbai medium-pacer Dhawal Kulkarni was the third player rewarded for his success on the recent India A tour of Australia, but there was no room for their team-mates Robin Uthappa and Manoj Tiwary.
The BCCI's selection committee, chaired by Sandeep Patil, picked the squad on Tuesday for five ODIs and a one-off Twenty20 international, after consultation with MS Dhoni and Duncan Fletcher via video conferencing from Manchester, venue of the fourth Test starting Thursday.
From the squad that played three ODIs in Bangladesh in June - after the IPL and before the tour of England - there are nine changes. The eight players rested by the BCCI for that series - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami - are all back.
Those dropped were Robin Uthappa, Manoj Tiwary, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kedar Jadhav, Wriddhiman Saha, Parvez Rasool, Akshar Patel, Vinay Kumar and Amit Mishra; most were expected omissions considering the selectors had named a weakened side for that short ODI series. Suresh Raina, who led India to a 2-0 win in Bangladesh, has been retained.
The first of the five ODIs will be played in Bristol on August 25, with matches in Cardiff, Nottingham, Birmingham and Leeds following. The T20 will be played in Birmingham on September 7, rounding off India's 10-week tour of England.
In 2011, India failed to win a single limited-overs match after going down 0-4 in the Tests. India are currently ranked fourth in ODIs, followed by England at fifth.
