Southampton: England captain Alastair Cook fell five runs short of his first Test century for 14 months on day one of the third Test against India at Southampton on Sunday.
After winning the toss, Cook lost opening partner Sam Robson for 26 but then added 158 with Gary Ballance.
But Cook perished when he edged a long-hop from spinner Ravindra Jadeja to keeper Mahendra Dhoni.
However, Ballance (104 not out) and Ian Bell (16 not out) helped England reach 247-2 by the close.
Essex left-hander Cook is now without a century in 28 Test innings. The England captain seemed set to end his 27-innings wait for a century when he edged a Ravindra Jadeja long-hop down the leg side to wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni to depart for 95.
For so long, the left-hander was on course for three figures, capitalising on being dropped on 15 to look more assured at the crease than at any point this summer.
Ballance was the centurion, the day revolved around Cook, whose barren run had mirrored the poor form of his side and led to the likes of former England captains Michael Vaughan, Geoffrey Boycott, Mike Atherton and Kevin Pietersen to call for him to resign.
