Mumbai: Kolkata Knight Riders will take on the Chennai Super Kings in the first match of the 2014 Champions League T20 which will be played in India from September 13 to October 04.
The qualifiers will begin on September 13 while the main draw will begin from September 17. KKR are the two-time IPL champions, having won it in 2014 and 2012 and they played in the 2012 CLT20 held in South Africa but they failed to qualify for the knock-outs.
India will be hosting the tournament and the format will include matches in the Group stage preceded by a qualifier. A total of 29 matches will be played in the competition, with the group stage featuring 10 teams. Each side will play the other four in its group once, with the top two sides from each group going through to the semi-finals.
Sanjay Patel, secretary of the BCCI issued a statement saying, "The Group stage matches will be played at Mohali, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Raipur. The Qualifier will be played at Raipur. The CLT20 Governing Council has confirmed the teams that will compete for a total prize money of US $ 6 million."
KKR and CSK are in Group A and it will feature the Dolphins, who were the champions of the Ram Slam T20 tournament in South Africa. The other team will be the Perth Scorchers who won the 2013/14 Big Bash League while the final team will be a team from the qualifying matches
Group B will feature the Hobart Hurricanes, who finished as the runner-up in the 2013/14 Big Bash League, Cape Cobras who were the runners-up in the Ram Slam T20, Kings XI Punjab who lost to KKR in the IPL final and the last team, a team from the qualifiers while the final team will be the winner of the Caribbean Premier League in the West Indies.
The CLT20 2014 qualifiers, to be played from September 13 to 16 will feature four teams - Mumbai Indians, New Zealand's T20 champions Northern Knights, Sri Lanka's T20 champions Southern Express and Pakistan's T20 winners Lahore Lions. These teams will play one other once, with the top two advancing to the Group Stage.
Lahore Lions are seeded Q1 in the qualifiers while Mumbai Indians, who finished fourth in the IPL are seeded Q2. Northern Knights, the New Zealand T20 champions are seeded Q3 while Southern Express, the winner of the Sri Lankan T20 championships, are seeded Q4.
Q1/Q3 will enter Group A if either of them makes it to the Group Stage while Q2/Q4 will enter Group B if they qualify. If Q1 and Q3 both make it to the Group Stage, then Q1 will enter Group A and Q3 will enter Group B. If Q2 and Q4 both make it to the Group Stage, then Q2 will enter Group B and Q4 will enter Group A.
