Dhaka: Opening batsman Imrul Kayes and medium pacer Rubel Hossain were on Thursday recalled to the Bangladesh squad for their three-match ODI series in West Indies next month, the duo coming in the place of the banned Shakib Al Hasan and Ziaur Rahman.
Star allrounder Shakib was banned by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and lost his place in the squad, while bowling allrounder Rahman, who was also part of the squad that played against India in June, was also axed from the 15-member squad.
"It's very difficult to replace a player of Shakib's calibre. He fills the role of two players - a batsman and a spinner. But we can take only one player in his place. Finally we have decided to take a batsman... as we felt we have enough back-up in spin bowling department," chief selector Faruque Ahmed told AFP.
Kayes, who scored a hundred on his Test comeback and a half-century in the only ODI he played this year against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, would hope to get a longer run in the team this time.
Rubel, on the other hand, was left out of the Bangladesh team after an off-colour World T20, where hosts Bangladesh were eliminated from the group stages.
Opener Tamim Iqbal has been retained by the selection committee, but his scratchy form has meant the selectors have picked four specialist openers in the squad with Kayes, Anamul Haque and Shamsur Rahman also in the fray.
Bangladesh ODI squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Rubel Hossain, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mithun Ali, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Sohag Gazi, Taskin Ahmed, Imrul Kayes, Al-Amin Hossain.
