Derby: Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane helped the Indians defeat Derbyshire by five wickets in their second warm-up game at Derby on Thursday.
Chasing 142 after the hosts declared their second innings on 156/3; the visitors reached the target in 36.3 overs at the loss of five wickets on the third and final day.
Indians lost the wicket of opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan (9) early with the scorecard reading 13/1. He fell to Matt Higginbottom after being trapped in front. However, Vijay (41 retired out) and Ajinkya Rahane (39 retired out) shared a 63-run partnership for the second wicket laying a firm base for the chase.
Rohit Sharma (10) and Wriddhiman Saha (19) failed to make use of the batting conditions falling to spinner David Wainwright and medium-pacer Gregory Cork respectively. Left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir wiped out the deficit scoring an unbeaten 21 to guide the Indians home in 36.3 overs.
Earlier, Derbyshire declared their second innings at 156 for 3, setting the Indians 142 runs to win. The visitors put themselves in a good position at 50 for 1, needing 92 runs to win at tea. The teams had decided to play 45 overs each on the final warm-up day and at tea Murali Vijay (23*) and Ajinkya Rahane (12*) were at the crease.
The Indians kept Derbyshire batsmen in check in the first session at the County Ground after declaring their first innings at 341/6 on Wednesday. The third morning of the fixture belonged to their bowlers. By the time the lunch was taken, Derbyshire were 62/2 in their second innings, leading by 47 runs.
The Indians gave Derbyshire two early blows in the form of Ben Slater and captain Chesney Hughes. Slater, who hit a fifty in the first dig, was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for an eight-ball duck in the third over.
Next man Hughes looked solid during his stay hitting four boundaries in his total of 20 before being caught by wicketkeeper MS Dhoni off Stuart Binny. Derbyshire were 32/2 when Billy Godleman (18*) came to the middle and along with opener Paul Borrington (17*) has so far added 30 runs for the third wicket to keep the Indian bowlers at bay. The two teams have been given 45 overs of batting each on the third day. Pankaj Singh, Ishwar Pandey and Varun Aaron did not bowl in the morning session.
For the Indians, Binny and Cheteshwar Pujara scored fifties on Day 2 to declare their first innings at 341 for 6 at the end of play on Wednesday, leading the county side by 15 runs.
Starting the day after Derbyshire had declared their innings overnight at 326 for 5 declared, India lost their openers Shikhar Dhawan (6) and Murali Vijay (6) early. Vijay consumed 28 deliveries for his six runs and hit only one boundary before Mark Turner had him leg before wicket. Vijay had fialed in the first warm-up game as well against Leicestershire getting out for 20. Dhawan departed four balls later when he was caught behind for six off 20-year-old Ben Cotton.
