Derby: Derbyshire made the Indian bowlers huff and puff on Day 1 of the second warm-up tie in Derby on Tuesday. Electing to bat under clear skies at the County Ground, Derbyshire were 326 for 5 at stumps with left-hander Billy Godleman unbeaten 67 and wicketkeeper batsmen Harvey Hosein not out on 53.
Derbyshire were in a spot of bother at one stage when they had lost four wickets for 115, but Wesley Durston played the innings of the day, a 90-ball 95, to send the Indians on a leather hunt. Right-handed Durston hammered as many as 14 fours and two sixes and shared a resurrecting 124-run stand with Godleman before falling to Stuart Binny. Durston's attack on the tourists included a 20-run over where Pankaj Singh was hit for three fours and a six.
Durston's wicket did not make things easier for the Indians, who since then failed to make inroads as sixth-wicket pair of Godleman and Hosein added 87 runs in the last 25 overs.
For the tourists, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the most successful bowler with figures of two for 27 in 11 overs. All the Indian bowlers were made to toil hard for their wickets. Pankaj and Ishwar Pandey were the pick of the seam bowlers taking one wicket apiece. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was economical in his 13 overs, giving away 24 runs and Varun Aaron went for 45 in his 12 overs but both failed to be amongst the wickets. Ishant Sharma didn't look as if he worked on bowling less no balls as he nine of those in 12 overs.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who was under bowled, went for 25 runs in his 7 overs and the Derby batsmen looked at ease against India's leading spinner. Indians tried as many as nine bowlers, including Dhoni himself, who was shown no mercy in the final over of the day in which he was hit for 11 runs.
The Indians, who had faced a second-string Leicester squad in the first drawn warm-up tie, are facing a weakened County side yet again in Derbyshire, who playing only a handful of players from their first eleven. Therefore, the quality of opposition that India are facing in Derbyshire can be questioned.
Like the first warm-up, India have all their 18 players available at their disposal and only 11 can be earmarked for batting and 11 for fielding in an innings. Runs scored and match figures registered in this game will not be counted in first-class tally.
Brief scores:
Derbyshire: 326 for 5 (Durston 95, Godleman 67*, Hosein 53*, Jadeja 2-27)
