Dhaka: An Indian side, nowhere near its full strength, with a cloud hanging over the broadcasting back home, has taken centrestage in a short three-match ODI series in Bangladesh that begins on Sunday.
While several fringe players get a chance to impress ahead of what will be an important season, Bangladesh have a chance to put it past India in a hastily organized series.
By resting several key players - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami - the BCCI has tried to be all things to all people.
A core group gets important rest ahead of a long English summer, while the replacements get a chance to make an impression as India look to expand their choices as ODI series in England and Australia, and the 2015 World Cup looms.
Despite the low profile of the series, arranged bang in the middle of the football World Cup in Brazil leading to a lack of interest from Indian broadcasters, comeback men Suresh Raina, named captain for the three ODIs, Robin Uthappa, Manoj Tiwary and R Vinay Kumar stand to lose a lot more than the newer faces in the squad. Raina and Uthappa return after strong performances in the IPL, their past record making them two of the more experienced members.
Gujarat allrounder Akshar Patel and Maharashtra batsman Kedar Jadhav had impressive first-class seasons, particularly the latter, but it was Patel's landmark IPL season, along with Ravindra Jadeja's absence, that fast-tracked him into the Indian squad. Jadhav was a lone bright spot in a miserable Delhi Daredevils campaign, and his finishing skills are sure to see him take his place in an inexperienced middle order.
For Bangladesh, who were eliminated in the group stages without a victory at the World T20 as the host nation, the series provides an opportunity to leave the visiting Indians red-faced. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim went public with his criticism, saying he didn't expect India to field such a weakened side, which can add as a catalyst for the hosts.
Their own side hasn't been short of controversy, with Shane Jurgensen sacked as coach after the World T20 and star allrounder Shakib Al Hasan saying their fans expected too much. Under new coach Chandika Hathurusingha, Bangladesh have also seen plenty of changes from the last time they played ODIs during the Asia Cup.
Despite losing back-to-back ODI series at home, against Sri Lanka and the Asia Cup, Bangladesh have frequently served up surprises, including a thrashing of New Zealand last year. The last time Bangladesh beat India in an ODI was during the 2012 Asia Cup when the hosts sprung a surprise in a game that saw Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 100th international hundred.
