Ishant Leads India Bounce Back

Johannesburg: Vernon Philander and Faf du Plesis put on a fifty-run stand for the seventh wicket to reconstruct South African innings after Indian pacers reduced the hosts to 146/6 on the second day of the first Test at Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg on Thursday.

India fought back gallantly in the post-tea session as pacers dismissed five South African batsmen in quick succession to reduce the hosts to 146/6 from 130/1.

Shami dismissed AB de Villiers (13) and JP Duminy (2) in one over to extend India's domination in the post-tea session against the hosts. The double blow reduced South Africa to 146/6, still trailing India's total of 280 by 134 runs.

South Africa were comfortably on 118/1 at tea against India when Ishant struck twice in two balls to change the course of the match.

Ishant trapped veteran batsman Jacques Kallis (0) leg before, soon after he clean bowled Hashim Amla (36) in the previous ball. The lanky pacer was on a hat-trick but AB de Villiers negotiated his next four balls of the over.

Zaheer joined the party in the very next over as he dismissed Graeme Smith (68) to rock the South African innings.

Smith scored his 38th Test fifty, which included eleven hits to the fence, as he along with Amla lead the hosts' run charge in the post-lunch session on Day 2. Amla hit six boundaries in his 74-ball innings.

The duo stitched 93 runs for the second wicket to took South Africa over 100-run mark after losing Alviro Petersen (21) soon after the lunch break.

Ishant trapped Petersen leg before to give visitors their first breakthrough and reduced South Africa to 37/1.

Earlier, South Africa reached 22/0 at lunch.

Vernon Philander snared four wickets and Morne Morkel took three, as South Africa bundled out India for 280 runs in their first innings.

India lost their last five wickets for just 25 runs as the Proteas pacers altered their lengths, taking full advantage of an overcast morning.

Morkel dismissed Indian captain MS Dhoni before Philander got rid of Ajinkya Rahane and Zaheer Khan off consecutive deliveries.

Morkel had Indian captain MS Dhoni caught behind by AB de Villiers in the ninth over of the day.

Morkel lured Dhoni on to the front foot with a length ball just outside off, the Indian captain got only half-forward as he poked at it and ended up edging the ball through to the keeper.

In the next over, Philander too had Rahane (47) caught behind and on the next delivery trapped Zaheer plumb in front of the wicket for a first ball duck.

India then lost their ninth wicket when Philander clean bowled Ishant Sharma on duck with an incoming delivery.

The day's play started with Rahane and Dhoni resuming the Indian first innings.
