New Zealand in Total Control in West Indies Test

Dunedin: The West Indies were 168 for two in their second innings at stumps on the third day of the first Test against New Zealand at University Oval in Dunedin. West Indies trail by 228 runs with 8 wickets remaining.

They were forced to follow on after being dismissed for 213 in their first innings, 396 runs behind New Zealand's 609-9 declared.

At the stump on day 3, Darren Bravo was not out 72 with Marlon Samuels on 17.

Earlier, the West Indies' first innings folded soon after lunch on the third day in Dunedin and they were asked to bat again, trailing the Black Caps by 396 runs.

New Zealand quicks Tim Southee and Trent Boult did the bulk of the damage in the first innings, taking seven wickets between them.

On a flattened pitch offering ideal batting conditions, the two bowlers concentrated on a fuller length that exploited the West Indies' minimal footwork.

Only Shivnarine Chanderpaul, playing in his 151st Test, offered any real resistance, reaching 76 before he was trapped leg before wicket by Boult.

It was Chanderpaul's 62nd Test half-century and he also passed the 11,000-run milestone during his innings.

The West Indies started the day on 67-2. Bravo (40), Marlon Samuels (14) and Narsingh Deonarine (15) fell to Southee while Boult claimed the scalps of Denesh Ramdin (12) with Chanderpaul.

Southee finished the innings with figures of four for 52 and Boult took 3-40.

Tino Best was run out trying to take a second run on a misfield, while spinner Ish Sodhi took the other two wickets.
