Kolkata: Shikhar Dhawan (21 not out) and Murali Vijay (16 not out) took India to 37/0 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test, after debutant Mohammed Shami helped hosts bundled out West Indies for 234 runs in their first innings.
Shami had a dream debut in the five-day format at his home ground as he took four wickets to put India in a commanding position at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Shami took his fourth wicket when he clean bowled Sheldon Cotterrell.
Ravichandran Ashwin clean bowled Shivnarine Chanderpaul to pin down the West Indies to 233/9.
Chanderpaul (36) played down the wrong line to the quicker delivery from Ashwin that was pitched outside off stump and skidded on while holding its line and went on to hit the off-stump.
Ravichandran Ashwin took his first wicket when he took a simple return catch to dismiss Veerasammy Permaul.
Bowling the last over of the second session, Sachin Tendulkar trapped Shane Shillingford plumb in front of the wicket with a straight delivery to reduce the West Indies to 192/7 at tea.
West Indies lost their sixth wicket when Pragyan Ojha had their captain Darren Sammy caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at long-off.
Mohammed Shami clean bowled Marlon Samuels, enabled MS Dhoni to run out Darren Bravo and then clean bowled Denesh Ramdin as the West Indies lost three wickets in three overs.
Shami took his third wicket when he clean bowled Ramdin by a reverse-swinging delivery that swung back into the right-hander after pitching on good length and crashed into the off-stump.
Shami enabled MS Dhoni to run out Darren Bravo (23) nudged the ball off the pads behind square leg and went down the pitch. There was no chance of a single, Chanderpaul never ran and it was his call since the ball was behind square. And by the time Bravo came back, Shami came running in and made a sharp return into the hands of Dhoni, who ran out Bravo.
Shami gave India the third breakthrough when he clean bowled Samuels (65), who was done in by the reverse swing and the pace of the delivery that came in sharply.
Marlon Samuels reached his 19th Test half-century in the second over after lunch.
Samuels had hit his maiden Test hundred at the Eden Gardens in 2002.
After two early jolts, Bravo and Samuels steered the West Indies first innings to 107/2 at lunch.
Mohammed Shami took his first Test wicket when he had opener Kieran Powell caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at mid-off.
Shami bowled a well-directed bouncer and Powell wanted to pull it but only managed to scoop it up in the air and Kumar ran back from mid-off to take a well-judged catch.
Powell hit a six and five fours in his 28-run knock.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave India an early breakthrough when he had opener Chris Gayle caught by Murali Vijay at second slip.
Without moving his feet and staying rooted to the crease, Gayle (18) poked at a dlivery away from his body that ended his tentative stay at the crease.
The breakthrough came after West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat.
Earlier, West Indies have won the toss and they decided to bat.
