Chittagong: Mominul Haque (181) helped the hosts get closer to New Zealand's 1st innings score. Bangladesh ended Day 3 at 380 for 7 easily avoided the follow-on on the third day of the first Test against New Zealand in Chittagong on Friday.
Mominul Haque's maiden Test century is the third highest score by a Bangladeshi batsman, and it was an innings that was his first serious expression of his calculative approach.
At stumps, Sohag Gazi and Abdur Razzak at the crease. Nasir Hossain was the last of the recognised batsman to be dismissed, which means that the tail would have to bat around Gazi, who is on 28 off 61 balls.
Mominul dictated terms for the six hours he spent at the crease, picking up where he left off overnight. Five fours came off the first 27 deliveries he faced, which got him to the century. He had to survive a couple of close calls when he edged a few and skied one towards deep point, but reached the mark off 98 balls.
Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (67), added 121 for the fifth wicket with Mominul that left the New Zealand bowlers in disarray.
Bangladesh, who have lost eight and drawn one of their nine Tests against New Zealand, trail by 89 runs with three wickets in hand on a slow pitch that has offered the bowlers no assistance.
Debutant left-arm seamer Corey Anderson was the lone bowler to emerge with credit, conceding just 23 runs in 14 overs in unhelpful conditions.
Mominul put on 126 for the third wicket with debutant Marshall Ayub, who defended dourly at the other end while making 25.
The pair, resuming at 103-2, took the score to 134 when Ayub was caught behind to hand Anderson his first Test wicket.
Former captain Shakib Al Hasan scored 19 in a fourth-wicket stand of 46 with Mominul when he was caught behind off Kane Williamson in the first over after lunch.
The second Test will be played in Dhaka from October 21 to 25, followed by three one-day internationals and one Twenty20 match.
