Chandigarh: They were the first team to arrive here and have already started to plot the downfall of their rivals in the Champions League Twenty20 qualifiers.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, a team which impressed all in the IPL this season, will take on teams from New Zealand (Otago Volts), Pakistan (Faisalabad Wolves), and Sri Lanka (Kandurata Maroons) in the qualifiers beginning on Tuesday.
The team has already had two practice sessions under coach Tom Moody - the first on Friday at the PCA stadium, Mohali and the second at the Sector 16 stadium here on Saturday. Though the team lost in the IPL semifinals this season, they are hoping to win the CLT20 and make their fans happy.
With Kumar Sangakkara, the regular captain of Sunrisers in the IPL, having opted to play for Sri Lankan outfit Kandurata Maroons in the CLT20, the Sunrisers team management has decided to prop up dashing Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan into the role of the captain. Moody announced this here and said he was optimistic about Dhawan's abilities as a leader.
"Having excelled in the Indian team over the recent past, Shikhar has dominated as a batsman and has been more than consistent. He is a complete package as a player and is considered a real team man. That's why we have decided to elevate him and make him our new captain," Moody said.
Drawing a parallel with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of who have led IPL teams, Moody said this new role will add to Shikhar's growth as an international player.
"Shikhar is ready to take on this honour and has shown great leadership qualities in the past. His recent experiences on the international stage and now the captaincy role will only enhance his reputation as a top-grade cricketer," Moody said.
The Sunrisers will take on Kandurata Maroons in their first qualifying match on September 17
