Edinburgh: Misbah ul Haq's unbeaten 83 and a terrific show by his bowlers helped Pakistan to a 96-run win against Scotland in Edinburgh on Friday.
Pakistan began their tour of England on a good note, registering a 96-run win over Scotland in the first ODI between the two sides. In Edinburgh on Friday, Pakistan successfully defended a total of 231 for 7, as Scotland went down to the bowling of Saeed Ajmal and Junaid Khan.
Chasing 232, Scotland had a nervy start, losing their first wicket for no score when Neil Carter was bowled by Junaid Khan in the second over. Mohammad Irfan's pace and bounce created problems for the hosts early on, but Kyle Coetzer brought his county experience to the fore, playing shots and hitting boundaries early in the innings.
Josh Davey also hit a few fours before he was smartly caught down the leg-side by Akmal. The wicket-keeper was involved again when Irfan got Coetzer caught behind, leaving Preston Mommsen and Moneeb Iqbal to rebuild.
Earlier, The tourists are using the game to gear up for their Champions Trophy campaign, which kicks off against the West Indies at The Oval in London on June 7.
They made a slow start after winning the toss and opting to bat at The Grange, but rallied to finish on 231 for seven.
Nasir Jamshed went for 20 before Haq claimed his first wicket of the day when Josh Davey caught Mohammad Hafeez (18) at backward point.
Imran Farhat moved to the brink of a half-century, only to be bowled by spinner Matt Machan when he miscued an attempted slog on 49.
Haq claimed the wickets of Asad Shafiq for seven and Umar Amin for three, before Kamran Akmal fell lbw to Neil Carter for 12.
Haq had gone into the match level with John Blain as the nation's top one-day wicket-taker with 41 scalps, but impressive figures of three for 39 saw him claim the honour outright.
Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and Saeed Ajmal steadied the boat with a 51-run partnership for the seventh wicket, but the latter fell for 28 when he misjudged a scoop shot off Iain Wardlaw and the ball skidded into his stumps.
Misbah finished unbeaten on 78, with Ehsan Adil 10 not out, as the tourists upped the run rate to leave Scotland with a challenging target to chase.
Earlier, Pakistan have won the toss and are bat first.
Drummond and Coleman sit out for Scotland, while Asad Ali and Rehman miss the team for Pakistan.
