Cape Town: Test opening batsman Alviro Petersen will replace Graeme Smith in South Africa's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales next month.
Petersen, 32, Petersen is a regular in the test squad but has made just 17 one-day international appearances since his debut in 2006 with a modest average of 31.
Primarily regarded as a Test specialist, Petersen has played in only 17 one-day internationals, scoring 437 runs at an average of 31.21 with four half-centuries.
But Hudson said Petersen was currently in good form for English county Somerset.
Smith was forced to withdraw from the squad after undergoing surgery on his left ankle that will keep him sidelined for four to six months.
South Africa open their Champions Trophy Group A campaign on June 6 against India, and will also face Pakistan and West Indies in their pool.
