Chanidgarh: Shikhar Dhawan, who scored a whirlwind century on debut, is doubtful for the final Test to be played at the Kotla in Delhi from Friday, Indian skipper MS Dhoni told reporters on Monday. Dhawan injured his left hand while fielding in Australia's second innings and did not take the field on Monday. A precautionary X-ray has revealed no fracture but the 27-year-old batsman may still miss the action on his home ground.
"Shikhar may not play in the final Test. You will soon get to know the official confirmation," Dhoni said.
At the post-match presentation, Shikhar said he had hurt his left hand while trying to save a boundary. "I fell on my knuckles when I dived," the southpaw, who played a dream knock of 187, said.
If Shikhar is ruled out, the team management is likely to bring in Ajinkya Rahane to partner Murali Vijay.
Australia, down 0-3 and in the dumps, suffered another jolt - skipper Michael Clarke is battling fitness issues. Clarke is suffering from a sore back and his absence in the Delhi Test could pave the way for vice-captain Shane Watson to take charge of the team.
"If I am unavailable due to my fitness, I don't know... I haven't spoken to the selectors, but I would imagine that Watto will be the captain, that's for sure," Clarke said.
