India v Australia, 2nd Test, Hyderabad, 3rd day

Ashwin's Double Strike Jolts Australia

Hyderabad: After a decent opening stand of 56 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin struck twice to dismiss David Warner and Phillip Hughes in quick succession in the second innings on the third day of the second Test against India in Hyderabad.

The visitors were faced with a tough task on hand after finishing day 3 at 74 for 2, still 192 runs in arrears.

Ashwin got the first breakthrough when he dismissed Warner (26), who in his attempt to sweep an outside leg delivery, missed the ball completely and was bowled.

Hughes (0) was next to be dismissed when he was bowled in almost similar fashion leaving the Aussies two down in the final session of the day.

The duo of Warner and Cowan wasted no time in putting up a swift partnership for the opening wicket right after India took a huge 266-run first innings lead courtesy Cheteshwar Pujara's second double hundred.

Earlier, Australia made a brief comeback as their spinners rattled Indian middle order in second session.

Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the Australian bowler as he dismissed Murali Vijay, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli.

Xavier Doherty also joined the party with triple scalps, removing Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to crumble Indian batting.

Dhoni and Virat Kohli added 56-runs stand to stretch India's past 200 after losing Sachin Tendulkar cheaply, who was given out in dramatic manner.

It was length delivery down the leg side by James Pattinson on which Sachin missed the flick and ball went to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade. Umpire Marais Erasmus initially gave caught behind not out and then had to overturn his decision after Pattinson appealed hard and forced him to consult third umpire. Replay showed a nick and catch was cleanly taken by Wade.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored his second double hundred as Indian batsmen continued their run feast against Australia.

The Pujara-Murali Vijay duo punished the lacklustre Australian attack as India went into lunch at a score of 400 for three with their first innings lead swelling upto 163.

Pujara-Vijay added a record 370 runs for the second-wicket partnership before the latter was finally dismissed for a well-made 167, ending his 361-ball knock, in which he hit 23 boundaries and two sixes.

India's newest 'Run-Machine' Pujara scored a magnificent 204 before being holed out in the deep fine-leg region trying to hook a James Pattinson delivery. Pujara faced 341 balls with 30 boundaries and a six.

During Pujara and Vijay's marathon partnership, there were a few records that tumbled.

Pujara-Vijay duo also eclipsed the 34-year-old second wicket partnership record of 344 runs set by Sunil Gavaskar (182) and Dilip Vengsarkar (157) against the West Indies at Kolkata in 1978.

Pujara didn't show any signs of hurry as he had enough time to play his strokes. With the pitch getting slower, Pattinson's bouncers were also losing its sting as the Saurashtra lad also completed another personal landmark of 1000 Test runs.

Pujara became the second fastest in terms of innings to reach the landmark in 18 knocks -- second to Vinod Kambli, who had reached the destination in 14 knocks.
