Cape Cobras Secure Series Title in Style

Johannesburg: Cape Cobras won the South Africa Cricket Series title in style Saturday with a 10-wicket victory at the Knights in Bloemfontein.

The success with a day and some hours to spare gave the Cape Town-based side an unassailable 30-point lead over Johannesburg outfit Highveld Lions, who lost top spot last weekend after drawing at the Knights.

Knights made 191 and 227 at Chevrolet Park in the central city and the Cobras replied with 416-6 declared and 4-0 to atone for the disappointment of gifting the title to the Titans last season after fading in the closing rounds.

Only a lengthy, run-rich Knights second innings could deprive the Cobras of victory and bowlers Johann Louw (5-70) and Beuran Hendricks (3-67) made sure that did not happen.

Tail-ender Dillon du Preez top scored for the Knights with his 44-run knock including two sixes and seven fours off 26 balls, but Ryan McLaren (42) and Rilee Rossouw (40) were the only other batsmen to impress.

Cobras needed three second-innings runs to win and they got four in the first over from a boundary by Richard Levi, whose first-innings 121 was pivotal to the triumph by his side.

Warriors must score 271 runs with six wickets remaining to defeat the Lions in a game that started as a potential title decider, but is now a play-off for second place.

Lions compiled 157 and 367 at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth and the Warriors have made 135 and 119-4 with Arno Jacobs unbeaten on 69 and Chris Morris taking three wickets.
