Mumbai: Australia extended their unbeaten run, stunning defending champions England by two runs in a Super Six thriller of the ICC Women's World Cup, at the Brabourne Stadium on Friday.
Restricted to a mere 147 runs in 44.4 overs - their lowest ODI total against England - the Aussie bowling-unit put up a sterling show to save the day.
For the English team it was yet another case of so-near-yet-so-far, as they lost wickets sporadically leading to a low run-rate.
Standing at 145 for 9, the pair of Anya Shrubsole and Holly Colvin dragged towards the target. But it remained elusive thanks to Colvin edging a cut to the eager gloves of Jodie Fields.
Chasing the measly total set by the Southern Stars, England mirrored the Aussie inning losing half their numbers within the first 10 overs.
Skipper Charlotte Edwards (8) started out in style with two boundaries, but was sent back by a controversial lbw decision.
Wicketkeeper-batter, Sarah Taylor too failed to make much difference, and followed the captain on a duck. Opener Danielle Wyatt (16) along with Lydia Greenway (49) tried to bring the team back in the game with 23 runs. But the pair was denied longevity at the crease by newcomer Holly Ferling who got Wyatt caught behind.
The English side lost four wickets in three overs as all-rounder Arran Brindle, Heather Knight and Jennifer Gunn fell like dominoes leaving the score at 39 for 6.
The seventh-wicket partnership of 57 runs between Greenway and Laura Marsh got England's hopes up. With Coyte getting Marsh lbw, and Ferling getting rid of Greenway the danger seemed to have passed for the Aussies.
However, Shrubsole and Colvin almost took the game with their steady 31-run addition. Pacer Ferling (3-35) - who replaced an unwell Elyse Perry - had a dream outing with three scalps.
Earlier, opting to field, England bowlers put up an impressive show toppling the Aussie top-order within 13 overs.
Losing quick wickets seemed to be the order of the day as the Australian side stood at 32 for 5. Player of the Match Lisa Sthalekar (41) pitched in 82 runs with Sarah Coyte (44) for the sixth wicket.
Brief scores:
Australia women: 147 (Coyte 44, Sthalekar 41, Shrubsole 3-24)
