Chennai: David Warner is still recuperating from a thumb injury that he sustained ahead of the ODI series against West Indies and has been ruled out of Australia's first practice game against Board President's XI at the Guru Nanak College ground on February 11-12.
The left-handed opener was not among the first eight players who landed in the city on Thursday. Australia media manager Matt Cenin informed that he would be in the last batch of players who will arrive on Tuesday.
According to the first list of players released by CA, Warner was scheduled to arrive on Saturday a couple of days ahead of the practice match.
There's a distinct possibility that the team management will go slow on the swashbuckling opener and will look to get him fit for the first Test that will start on February 22.
The eight players - Jackson Bird, Ed Cowan, Moises Henriques, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Steve Smith - who arrived on Thursday night, took the day off on Friday. "They are getting acclimatized to the conditions and had a pool session. The boys will have their first practice session on Saturday morning at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the venue of the first Test," Cenin said.
