Melbourne: A century from debutant Phillip Hughes and sensational fielding helped Australia to a 107-run win against Sri Lanka in Friday's first one-day international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Hughes - who hit 112 from 129 deliveries - became the first Aussie to notch a hundred in their maiden one-day appearance as his country posted a huge score of 5-305, aided by terrific contributions from skipper George Bailey (89 off 79 balls) and David Hussey (60 not out off 34).
Despite losing two early wickets, Sri Lanka were in the game at 2-111 after 25 overs with Tillakaratne Dilshan (51) and Dinesh Chandimal (73) looking comfortable at the crease.
But a period of madness that saw Australia complete three run-outs - two of which were direct hits in less than five overs effectively ended the contest as Dilshan, Angelo Mathews (12) and Lahiru Thirimanne (zero) were sent packing.
And pacemen Clint McKay (4-33) and Mitchell Johnson (2-43) mopped up the tail as Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 198.
Needing more than six runs per over, the tourists made a disastrous start to their daunting run chase.
After Dilshan played and missed at three McKay deliveries in the second over - he also edged a boundary through slips in the third - Upul Tharanga (one) was dismissed by Mitchell Starc (1-25).
Tharanga was caught by wicket-keeper Brad Haddin and Mahela Jayawardene (five) soon followed when he edged McKay to Aaron Finch at first slip.
Dilshan continued to take risks in trademark fashion while Chandimal started off patiently before displaying his obvious talent with a series of sublime strokes.
Both batsmen jumped on anything short and hit several boundaries through point and gully and they passed 100 in the 23rd over.
Australia's spinners were not looking threatening - Xavier Doherty, Glenn Maxwell and Hussey bowled 17 overs between with them without taking a wicket - and Sri Lanka seemed right in the game.
A brilliant piece of fielding from Khawaja changed that though, as he threw down the stumps at mid-off to remove Dilshan after he risked a quick single in the 26th over.
Just four overs later, Maxwell produced a direct hit from the off-side to dismiss Mathews and from the very next ball a suicidal attempted single saw Thirimanne run out for a diamond duck.
Chandimal continued to play well but he ran out of partners before being dismissed thanks to a sublime one-hand catch from Haddin.
And McKay and Johnson finished off the innings with a minimum of fuss as the tourists were bowled out with exactly 10 overs remaining.
Earlier, an Australian side fielding three debutants - Hughes, Finch and Khawaja - made a bright start in their attempt to stop a three-match losing streak against Sri Lanka at the MCG.
Finch (16) and Hughes added 53 for the first wicket before Ajantha Mendis (1-62) removed the former, caught behind.
Khawaja (three) did not last long, run out by Jeevan Mendis when his bat was over the line but not grounded.
Bailey made a positive start to his innings, timing the ball well, and he and Hughes quickly got to work.
They added 140 runs at exactly a run a ball for the third wicket with Hughes typically strong square of the wicket, hitting five fours in his favourite area.
The left-hander slowed up as he approached his century but regular boundaries from Bailey kept the pressure off before Hughes reached his milestone with a quick single off the bowling of Ajantha Mendis.
Hughes added a further 12 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Malinga and Bailey also fell towards the end, just short of a deserved century when he picked out Jeevan Mendis on the mid-wicket fence off the bowling of Mathews (1-46).
Maxwell (five) came and went quickly before Hussey's late hitting - he smashed five fours and one six - helped Australia push past 300, a total that proved far too much for their opponents.
