Johannesburg: Faf du Plessis impressive international career gained fresh momentum on Thursday when Cricket South Africa (CSA) named him as captain of the Proteas Blue Label Telecoms squad for the three-match KFC T20 International Series against New Zealand later this month.
The first match in the KFC Series takes place at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday, 21 December; the second at Buffalo Park on Sunday, 23 December; and the final one at Axxess St. George's on Wednesday, 26 December.
"AB de Villiers remains our first-choice captain in this format," commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson, "but AB is one of the players we need to rotate in the interest of his workload across all three formats and we want to have one captain for the entire series."
Hudson also named three new caps in Nashua Titans opening batsman Henry Davids and the bizhub Highveld Lions duo of Quinton de Kock, still only 19 years old, and Aaron Phangiso. Their franchise team mate, Chris Morris, is technically also a new cap as the T20 Series he played for the Proteas against Zimbabwe earlier this year was an unofficial one.
Blue Label Telecoms Twenty20 squad:
Cricket South AFrica (CSA) on Thursday also named a squad of 13 players for the two-match Sunfoil Test Series.
The first match takes place at Sahara Park Newlands from January 2 and the second will be played at Axxess St. George's from January 11.
Andrew Hudson said: "AB de Villiers has kept wicket exceptionally well since taking the gloves from Mark Boucher and having two quality all-rounders among our top five batsmen has added a great deal to the side."
"Thami Tsolekile remains our back-up wicketkeeper should the need arise, " he added.
