Nagpur: Matt Prior and debutant Joe Root were involved in a dogged unbeaten 60 run-stand for the 6th wicket and frustrated the Indian bowlers. England had moved to 199 for 5 on the first day of the fourth and final Test at VCA Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur.
India made a good comeback against England in the second session with double strike. Pietersen held the one end as he remained unbeaten 68 to take England to 133 for 4 at tea.
But after tea debutant Ravindra Jadeja shone with the ball as he struck to dismiss Kevin Pietersen and put England on backfoot.
The hosts got the breakthrough that they needed against England when left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Jonathan Trott.
Piyush Chawla also struck to take his first wicket, dismissing Ian Bell to leave England struggling at 119 for 4 in 60.5 overs.
Trott (44) made an error in judgement when he left a regular delivery from Jadeja and allowed it to go through. However, though the ball did not turn, it did brush the off-side wicket to disturb the stumps. Jadeja got his first Test wicket of his career.
Kevin Pietersen hit a patient half-century. He smashed seven boundaries in his 29th Test fifty that came in 108 balls.
Pietersen and Trott added 86-run stand for the third wicket to revive England after losing the openers in quick succession.
Pacer Ishant Sharma struck twice in the first hour of play to send back England captain Alastair Cook and Nick Compton cheaply as India took early control.
Sharma sent back Compton for 3 to leave England 3 for one and then trapped the in-form Cook leg before for one to leave the visitors gasping at 16 for 2 in the 11th over.
India, who chose to go in with only one fast bowler in Sharma to accommodate the third regular spinner leggie Piyush Chawla, made England struggle for runs with the gangling Delhi pacer, at last showing some aggression in the rubber.
Trott, lucky not to be given out leg before off Sharma by umpire Kumar Dharmasena, started off with a flowing straight drive off Pragyan Ojha who started the bowling attack with Sharma.
Trott survived the leg before appeal when he was struck in line with the off stump when on 6 and the batsmen ran a leg bye to long on.
India got rid off the thorn in their flesh right through the series, Cook, through a dubious umpiring decision by Dharmasena.
The England captain was declared out trapped in front by Sharma but replays showed he was hit outside the line and the ball was not doing enough bending inwards to have struck the stumps.
Sharma's fine first spell read 6-2-18-2 but his replacement, debutant Ravindra Jadeja, bowled a few loose balls initially and was struck for fours by Kevin Pietersen and Trott on either side of the drinks break.
