Kolkata: India suffered second successive humiliating defeat in their own backyard as England chased down a modest 41-run target to win the third Test and lead four-match series 2-1.
England stuttered as they lost three quick wickets on the fifth and last day of the third Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Indian spinners rocked the visitors chase by reducing them to 8/3 in 4.2 overs. Ian Bell and Nick Compton added an unbeaten 33-run stand to take England to a victory in 12.1 overs. Bell made quick-fire 28 off 28 balls, smacking four boundaries.
Ravichandran Ashwin struck in the first of the innings to give England early jolt as he dismissed Alastair Cook.
Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 239 for 9, India just added 8 runs before being bowled out in the second over of the day. Ravichandran Ashwin remained unbeaten on 91.
James Anderson dismissed Pragyan Ojha as England bowled out India for 247 in their second innings with a meagre lead of 40 runs.
Ashwin started off the last day's play in a style, smashing Steven Finn for two boundaries in the first over to complete half-century stand.
A gutsy unbeaten 83 by Ashwin delayed the inevitable and saved India the embarrassment of an innings defeat inside four days.
