Brisbane: JP Duminy, the South Africa batsman, has been ruled out of the rest of the Brisbane Test and faces three to six months out of the game after rupturing an Achilles tendon in his left heel during the post-play warm-down on Friday. He will have surgery on Saturday.
After his side finished in a commanding position at 255 for two, not 10 minutes earlier, Duminy added a dramatic post-script to the day's play as he slipped and fell while attempting shuttle runs.
Duminy had played no part in the on-field action during the day, but was doing drills with fitness trainer Rob Walter when he slipped. After going down, he was treated on the field by physiotherapist Brandon Jackson and had to be carried off by bowling coach Allan Donald and Jackson. He was taken for X-rays immediately afterwards, which revealed the injury.
Duminy will fly home, and 12th man Faf du Plessis will take up fielding duties for South Africa in his absence. South Africa will name a replacement for Duminy on Monday.
The lower order batsman & part time off-spinner Duminy was warming down by kicking a rugby ball around with teammates on the playing field, after the Proteas reached stumps at 255 for two, when he suffered a mishap.
Duminy, 28, a star of South Africa's historic 2-1 series victory in Australia four years ago, was carried off the ground by medical staff.
A team spokesperson said Duminy had been taken to hospital for scans on a left ankle.
Duminy could play an important role for the Proteas in the remainder of the first Test with his off-spin after leg-spinner Imran Tahir was left out of the team for the Gabba opener.
