Johannesburg: Highveld Lions earned a much deserved victory over Yorkshire in their Champions League Twenty20 match in Johannesburg to reach the semifinals.
Jean Symes (27* off 22 balls) played a gem of an innings to guide the Lions to victory. This result means that IPL teams Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have been eliminated from the competition.
Highveld Lions finished the group stage with 12 points and they, along with Sydney Sixers, would be advancing to the semifinals from Group B.
The match took a drastic turn when Quinton de Kock's impressive innings was ended by Iain Wardlaw during Lions' 132-run chase.
De Kock made 32 runs with the help of 2 boundaries and 2 sixes. Highveld Lions suffered another setback when they lost Neil McKenzie cheaply.
McKenzie (13) along with Quinton de Kock tried to revive the Lions chase, but ultimately was dismissed when he completely failed to read Azeem Rafiq's swinger and was caught leg before.
Earlier, the Lions got off to a bad start when they lost their openers early.
Debutant Oliver Hannon-Dalby gave Yorkshire their first breakthrough when he dismissed Highveld Lions skipper Alviro Petersen.
Petersen, who made a steady 18-ball 19 runs got the slightest of edges of a short pitched Hannon-Dalby delivery that was taken comfortably by the wicketkeeper.
Steven Patterson then struck to dismiss the dangerous Gulam Bodi (8) as the southpaw was caught plumb before the wicket. The Petersen-Bodi duo put up 27 runs for the opening wicket.
Yorkshire set a target of 132 for the Highveld Lions in their rain-interrupted Champions League Twenty20 match at Wanderers in Johannesburg.
Sohail Tanvir picked up a wicket off the last ball of the innings when he dismissed Azeem Rafiq for 4 runs. Dan Hodgson (10*) remained at the crease with a single boundary to his name.
Aaron Phangiso's dream run in the Champions League T20 continued when he dismissed Gary Balance (17) by having him caught at short-third man in his attempt to maneuver a slog shot.
Earlier, after a brief rain break, play resumed in the Highveld Lions-Yorkshire match and Alviro Petersen immediately gifted the Lions with the priced wicket of Phil Jaques.
Skipper Petersen got the better of Jaques' (31) stumps, who completely failed in his attempt to hit a slog sweep. Jaques remained the highest run getter for Yorkshire with 5 boundaries to his credit.
