West Indies v Australia, World T20, Colombo

Australia Beat Windies by 17 runs (D/L)

Colombo: Australia's chase of the mammoth West Indies target of 192 was halted due to rain in their World T20 match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

At present, Australia are ahead according to the Duckworth-Lewis method as the par score is 83. The Aussies are well placed at 100 for the loss of one wicket after 9.1 overs.

Opener Shane Watson was batting on 41 off 24 balls while Michael Hussey was unbeaten on 28 off 19. Australia need another 92 from 65 balls to win the contest.

After the dismissal of David Warner, Hussey and Watson led the Australian attack to keep the chase of the Windies target well within reach.

Marlon Samuels was sweltered by Watson in the eighth over when the Aussie cracked 22 runs off it with two 4s and two 6s.

Australia's innings got a boosting start when David Warner played a blazing innings before Fidel Edwards got the breakthrough for the Windies by dismissing the left-hander.

Warner, who scored his 28 runs in swift fashion, got the Aussies off to a flying start when he dominated Ravi Rampaul's opening over by smashing two sixes and two boundaries before knicking an outside off Edwards delivery straight to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Earlier, the blistering partnership between Samules (50) and Dwayne Bravo, which paced the Windies innings, along with the heroics of Chris Gayle (54) helped the Windies set a mammoth target of 192 for Australia.

The partnership between Samuels and Bravo was ended by Brad Hogg when he struck to earn some respite for the Aussies.

Hogg's flat delivery got the better of Samuels, who played an immaculate innings to score a quickfire 50 to put up an impressive 47 run partnership with Bravo, before mishiting the ball to long on for a simple catch.

Previously, Shane Watson came through with an important breakthrough for the Aussies as he scalped Chris Gayle (54), who slammed five 4s and four 6s in his powerful 26-ball fifty.

Gayle got West Indies back on track after suffering early setbacks in their World T20 match in the form of Dwayne Smith (2) and Johnson Charles (16).

Gayle fought back with an impressive half century, at a time when it was needed the most, to hold the Windies innings steady before falling to a perfect short-pitched Watson delivery.

Watson made no mistake in taking the catch off his own bowling to send the Calypso king back to the changing room.

Shane Watson is the Man of the Match for his all-round display.
